{"id":615,"date":"2023-10-05T16:02:25","date_gmt":"2023-10-05T16:02:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yoga-liverpool.co.uk\/?p=615"},"modified":"2023-10-05T16:02:31","modified_gmt":"2023-10-05T16:02:31","slug":"the-real-causes-of-aging-and-what-we-can-do-about-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yoga-liverpool.co.uk\/?p=615","title":{"rendered":"The Real Causes of Aging and What We Can Do About It"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is a lot of research and scientific effort going on at the moment into understanding aging and the consequences of aging.\u00a0 Most of this research <strong>is NOT concerned with extending lifespan<\/strong> but increasing our healthspan \u2013 that is reducing the length of time in later life when many people become chronically ill or frail.<\/p>\n<p>The two biggest factors in aging would now appear to be \u2013<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Cell senescence<\/li>\n<li>mTOR<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Cell Senescence<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After cells have replicated (divided) a number of times, they should die through a process known as apoptosis whereby they die.\u00a0 However some cells don\u2019t die but go into a twilight state \u2013 still alive but not dividing, what the press have called \u201czombie\u201d cells.\u00a0 <strong>However these cells can secrete toxic chemicals which have been linked to many diseases of old age.\u00a0 The chemicals produced by &#8220;zombie&#8221; cells are highly inflammatory.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The more senescent cells we have, the older we become.<\/p>\n<p><strong>mTOR<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>mTOR is a protein complex found in most cells and it\u2019s role appears to be to allow the body to manage periods of starvation.\u00a0 With mTOR switched on our body enters \u201cgrowth mode\u201d and cells are instructed to grow and divide <strong>ie we age<\/strong>.\u00a0 The key to slowing aging may be to regularly \u201cswitch off\u201d the mTOR complexes found in our cells<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Slowing Aging \u2013 What We Can Do<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Diet 1 \u2013 Limit calorie intake, possibly have 1 or 2 limited fasts per week<\/li>\n<li>Diet 2 \u2013 Increase the amount of wholegrains, nuts, seeds, oily fish, complex carbs, vegetable protein, limited dairy and no red meat (red meat contains methionine). Have no ultra processed foods or simple sugars<\/li>\n<li>Diet 3 \u2013 Vitamin D3 strengthens the immune system and pre\/probiotics for the gut can be helpful<\/li>\n<li>Work at losing central fats (abdominal fat) \u2013 abdominal fat cells secrete highly toxic inflammatory chemicals. As well as good diet, learn to relax (cortisol is a big factor in the accumulation of belly fat aka \u201cstress belly\u201d) and ensure you get a good night\u2019s sleep.<\/li>\n<li>Keep your brain young by keeping moving. Learn new skills or hobbies \u2013 music and language learning seem to be particularly helpful in building \u201ccognitive reserve\u201d to help guard against mental decline.<\/li>\n<li>Take part in strength training 2 or 3 times per week as well as cardio vascular exercise 3 to 5 times per week.
